The Schoolhouse Thrift Shop was founded in 1992. Housed in a building that functioned as an Albemarle County school in the early part of the 20th century, the space has been transformed to sell donated clothing, housewares, books and toys with proceeds benefiting the Charlottesville community.
We rely on donations from community members to stock the shop. If you would like to donate your gently used goods to the thrift shop, you may come in anytime during regular store hours. All donations are tax deductible. Please note that we do not accept furniture, televisions, or pillows.
As a ministry of the Episcopal Church, we donate all proceeds to local charities and outreach centers that benefit the homeless, the aging, children, and others in need.
We offer books, homewares, toys, accessories, and clothing for all ages. Whether you're looking for current brands or vintage items, you'll find it at the shop!
The Schoolhouse Thrift Shop at Rio put on its annual St. Nicholas Toy Sale on Saturday, December 6. Thanks to you, we were able to raise nearly 1,900 dollars for the charities we support. You can see our feature on NBC29 here.
We still have brand new toys for sale. Come on in and shop during regular store hours; let us know you've come for the toy sale and we'll direct you to the right place.
We ask that you continue to hold donations until after the Holidays. We simply don't have the space to sort at this time, but we truly appreciate your generosity.
The Schoolhouse Thrift Shop at Rio opened in 1992 to serve the local community by providing goods at low cost and donating proceeds to local charities and outreach programs. As a ministry of Region XV of the Episcopal Church, we raise funds for Habitat for Humanity, Ministry with the Aging, The Alliance for Interfaith Ministries, and the Gertrude Mitchell House, thereby helping children, women, the aging, and those in need.
Our aim is to provide a welcoming environment and great products within the unique setting of a historical schoolhouse building. The shop is run primarily by a dedicated team of volunteers who assist with the daily needs of the retail store and help direct us in our mission through the years. Volunteering at the Schoolhouse Thrift Shop offers valuable fellowship for those who participate.
We rely on volunteers to assist with the daily running of the shop. All are welcome! Tasks include sorting and pricing donated merchandise, organizing the shop, creating signage, and assisting customers. We want our volunteers to use their strengths to enhance the shop and to encourage one another while working as a team in three to four hour shifts. We welcome a variety of commitment levels. If interested, please contact us here.
